Equi-Soft Girth FAQ

Equi-Soft Girth FAQ

Equi-Soft Girth FAQ

What size should I choose for the padding of my Equi-Soft® girth?

The size of the pads for the Equi-Soft® girths is based on the respective length of the girth as following:

  • Girths up to a length of 45 cm require the pad in size 45 cm.
  • Girths from a length of 50 cm require the pad in the size 50-150 cm.
Do I always need the Equi-Soft stud and belly girth when jumping?

It is recommended to use the Equi-Soft Stud Girth when riding or jumping with studs, particularly if the horse’s hooves may come into contact with the girth or belly area.

Whenever there is a possibility of the hooves striking the girth or underside of the horse, a stud protection girth is strongly advised. However, for small jumps where there is no risk of the studs catching on the elastic rings, the standard Equi-Soft girth can also be used safely.

I have heard that you should always order the EquiSoft girth shorter/longer than a regular girth. Is this true?

It is not possible to provide a general guideline for the correct length of the Equi-Soft girth, as it depends on the individual horse and saddle. However, in most cases, the standard girth length is suitable. For an optimal fit, the Equi-Soft girth should sit approximately one to two hand widths above the horse’s elbow.

How do I measure the correct girth length for a Stübben girth, including Equi-Soft®?

To determine the correct girth length for a horse, begin by saddling the horse with its usual saddle and saddle pad. Measure the distance between the lower edge of one billet strap and the lower edge of the billet strap on the opposite side, following the natural contour of the horse’s barrel. This measurement provides an approximate girth length.

For the Equi-Soft® girth, it is essential that the buckles sit approximately one hand-width above the horse’s elbow when fastened. This position ensures comfort and allows freedom of movement, taking into account the girth’s unique elastic ring system.

The length of both the Equi-Soft® and other girths is measured from buckle end to buckle end.

Tip: Always tighten the girth evenly on both sides and avoid over-tightening. Typical size ranges are 40–85 cm for short girths (used with long billets) and 100–150 cm for long girths, measured in 5 cm increments.

How tight should the Equi-Soft® girth be tightened?
ChatGPT said:

The Equi-Soft® girth should be tightened securely enough to remain stable without slipping, while still allowing the horse to breathe freely and comfortably. The elastic rings should be under light, even tension but must retain sufficient elasticity to expand naturally with the horse’s ribcage.

Care should be taken not to over-tighten the girth, even if it appears easy to adjust or the horse shows no signs of discomfort. Excessive tension causes the girth to behave like a conventional girth, negating its unique pressure-relieving properties and reducing overall comfort for the horse.

Which Equi Soft pad should I choose for my horse?

There are three pad options available for the Equi-Soft® girth: neoprene, leather, and lambskin. All three materials are exceptionally soft, easy to clean or wash, and designed to provide the highest level of comfort for the horse.

For horses with particularly sensitive skin, the lambskin or neoprene pads are especially recommended due to their gentle, cushioning properties.

How do I properly care for my Equi-Soft® girth?

Like the saddle, the Equi-Soft® girth should be cleaned using leather soap and appropriate leather care products. To clean it properly, the rubber rings can be gently moved upward. The suede sections can be wiped with a damp cloth and do not require any additional care.

Important: Severely hardened leather can lead to rubbing and discomfort for the horse. To prevent this, regular care is essential. The Equi-Soft® girth must never be washed in a washing machine.

Cleaning the Pads of the Equi-Soft® Girth

Neoprene Padding:

  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C.
  • Use a protective washing bag.
  • Avoid washing with items that have Velcro fasteners.
  • Air dry away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not tumble dry.

Leather Padding:

  • Clean with leather soap and leather care products, just like the Equi-Soft® girth itself.
  • Do not wash in the washing machine.
  • Air dry away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not tumble dry.

Lambskin Padding:

  • Hand wash using a suitable lambskin detergent.
  • Air dry without direct exposure to sunlight.
  • Do not tumble dry.
How to get the tension properly centred with the Equi-Soft girth?

The centre of the girth should be placed centrally on the horse's girth central line. Even tension on both sides of the girth is recommended for optimal pressure distribution. Do not tighten the girth too much, as it may hinder chest expansion.
