甘い鉄は黒い鉄と銅で作られており、馬の口の中の水分を促進する金属を作ります。黒い鉄と銅の化合物はゆっくりと酸化と錆を引き起こします。馬にゆっくりと無害で、酸化は馬が好きで唾液分泌を促進する甘い味を持っています。この金属はほとんど常に変色します。ビットの頬と関節は、錆びないステンレス鋼で作られています。甘い鉄で少し作られたものは何年も続き、錆は馬を剥がしたり害を与えたりしません。また、空気中の水分は、サルビアと同じように錆びます。これが起こらないようにする唯一の方法は、加熱された環境にビットを保存することです。錆を除去する非常に細かいサンドペーパーでビットを簡単にこすり落とすことができ、ビットやその使用に悪影響を及ぼさないでしょう。また、使用するたびにビットを洗うことをお勧めしますが、それが完全に乾燥していることを確認します。また、酸化プロセスを遅くするために、再び使用していないときに植物油でコーティングすることもできます。
